Choosing where to have a Social Media Presence
There are hundreds of social media sites out there and choosing where to have your presence can seem overwhelming. You should choose social media sites based on your target audience; what sites are they using? The features and benefits of the site will also play a factor in choosing where you belong.
- The Big Three. When it comes to social media there are clear front runners in terms of where your target audience have a presence. Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are considered the staples of the social media world and should be considered in your social media strategy. It might not make sense to use all three for your business, however, so ensure you evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each.
- Content. What information you choose to share will play a role in what sites you use. If you want to include content such as photos and videos, sites like Flickr and You Tube might be worth considering. If you want to share information through links, Twitter is a favourite as a source of news and information.
- B2B or B2C. This is an important factor to consider when choosing what social media sites to use. For example if you are a B2C business, you might consider location based sites like foursquare. This site allows users to “check in” at your business, broadcasting this information to their connections.
Social Media Site Index
We have mentioned a few Social Media sites here and if you are new to Social Media, you might not be familiar with them. Here is a brief description for each.

LinkedIn: This site is strictly professional, and for good reason. You can connect with colleagues, find employees and network with others in your field. User profiles are a virtual resume and business can use the site for company pages providing details about products, services and employees.
YouTube: It’s more than just a collection of funny cat videos. You Tube allows users to search and view all types of videos and business can even create their own You Tube channel showcasing their own videos whether they are informational, educational (how-to’s) or the most recent TV commercial. Funny cat videos are not required!
Flickr: Allows users to upload photos and create albums available to their friends. Businesses can use this to showcase products or services. You might even want to have a virtual photo “history” of your company by uploading old photos and showing how times have changed!
Foursquare: Users can check in at different locations using their mobile phone and broadcast this information to their friends. Business with retail locations can benefit from this as users are virtually endorsing that particular business, letting all their friends know.
